Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the way of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," described a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle management.
