RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of access tunnels leading to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," he said. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
